Jerry Garcia's Teddy Bear's Picnic

I came across Jerry Garcia's rendition of Teddy Bears' Picnic today. It evoked really bad false memories.

Growing up, I know we had an album that contained the Teddy's Bears Picnic. I don't think I bought the album. But I don't remember not liking the song.

The way Jerry sang it though, was scary. It's the slow, dark thumping music and Jerry's twang warning against going into the woods, but if you go, better wear a disguise. 'Cause you're gonna run into every bear there ever was, gathered for a picnic. Oh no, what are they eating? You. They are looking to eat those who stole into the forest when told they shouldn't! Jeez.

I don't believe Jerry when he says they became tired little teddy bears needing their mommies. I mean, that's like kids turning evil when they're alone and pretending to be innocent when adults are around.

Okay, I made up the part about the bears eating people. But that's what Jerry made me remember, the way he sang that song.

I remember that album. I think about that album alot. Wish we still had it. Had How Much is That Doggy in the Window on it. Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini too, I think.

A few years ago in Winnipeg, sister in law had a CD with those songs on it. Don't know if it was Jerry Garcia's. Sounded like I remembered. Not scary at all.

We would have had the Wee Sing album or some other children's album. It's Jerry's twisted humour that made the song scary. Jerry was a member of the Grateful Dead. They used vicious dancing bears as their mascot and a skull with a lightning bolt as their emblem.

Oh come on! "Vicious bears", Skulls and such? Those bears are the most endearing creatures. How could dancing bears be vicious? And the skull is actually known as the Steal Your Face emblem. It's as primal as life itself.

The Dead have been taking us all on trips for more than 40 years. Now, how could that be scary. For more info on the Dead, visit www.dead.net

I knew that'd bring you to their defence. I ran to our car just now to look at the dancing bears sticker. I give you that they are not exactly vicious looking. But elsewhere, I've seen these bears with malicious faces. And no thanks, I don't want my face stolen.
