He's Got My Business

I went to the garage today to replace the summer tires on my car to winter ones. When I dropped the car off, I asked Rick, the garage owner of Toronto Motors on Vaughan Road, how much the tire exchange would cost. He said it's $20 per tire plus $5 to do the valve, so it will be $100 total.

When I came home, I talked to The Man who said, it shouldn't be that much. While he couldn't remember how much it was when he brought the car in last year, he didn't think it was $100.

When I picked the car up, Rick said, I thought we had to put the tires on the rim first. But your winter tires are already on the rim so it cuts down the cost three times. It's $25 to change the tires. Plus $5 because we found a little tear in one of the tires and we repaired it and positioned it so when we inflated the tire, the rubber would expand to seal the tear. Otherwise, you would get a slow leak over the winter.

Rick will be my new mechanic from now on.

Unless you're a regular at Rick's, he may be pulling the "honesty scam" on you. Car mechanics purposely give you a high quote then charge you less when you come pick up the car. They will do this if it's a small job and you are a new client. They "win" your confidence then gouge you on the next big job. However, it appears that you've been to Rick before, so he may just be an honest mechanic afterall.

The lengths that people go to to cheat you!

We've used Rick several times. The Man likes Rick. I'm learning to like him more. I like that he breaks down every cost before doing the work.

He's never struck me as a cheat, though when he's being honest, he makes a point of telling you so. I've wondered about the quality of his work, but I wonder about that with every mechanic.

In man ways, I like Rick better than Gus, the guy that HH and JB also use. Repairs with Gus have always been around $1000 and he's never been able to get rid of a light on the control panel or the squeeky brakes we have. So far, we've used Gus for big jobs, Rick for smaller ones. I think the next far away time we need a big job done, I'll take it to Rick and see.

I pay $5 per tire to change when they are on rims. Total of $20 plus taxes. You can pay as much as $32 plus taxes depending on where you go. Where is this Rick fellow? I've not been happy with Gus.
